The Parkinson’s Society of Alberta (PSA) provides an environment where individuals, families & caregivers with Parkinson’s can belong to a community of support and caring through the following services.

The Parkinson’s Society of Alberta (PSA) offers the following services and programs:

Therapeutic Services

  • Social Worker
  • Exercise/physiotherapy/tai chi referrals
  • Outreach Services
  • Speech Education - Refer individuals to the Education in Motion program for speech assessment and education.

Information & Awareness

  • Social Worker
  • Newsletter – a monthly publication sent out to PSA members
  • Public displays - Provide Parkinson’s awareness information sessions to the public and stakeholders within Edmonton and surrounding areas.
  • Regional Conferences - Participate in conferences and fairs with Parkinson’s awareness information.
  • In-services
  • Printed and educational material

  • Resource/lending library - Maintain PSA’s library resources.

Psychosocial Support

  • Social Worker - One-on-one support and education for people with Parkinson’s
  • Support groups/chapters - Monthly or bi-monthly support group meetings and the development of new groups as needed.
  • Peer support program
  • Caregiver support program - Educate the family and caregiver on Parkinson’s, family conference meetings and telephone support.
  • Educational meetings - Organize in-house presentations, guest speakers and up-to-date resources.
  • Referral to local resources
  • Provide support and guidance to peer group leaders.

Edmonton General Parkinson Support Group for Caregivers and People With Parkinson’s
Next meeting will be Thursday, January 8, 2009 @ 2 p.m.
Meetings every second Thursday of each month.

Support Group Parkinson’s Plus/MSA/PSP
PSA will provide support for individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) or Progressive Supernuclear Palsy (PSP). Please call 780-482-8993 or 1-888-873-9801 to book an appointment.

Speech Support Practice Group I
Held each Wednesday 1–3 p.m.
A peer run practice group for all those who have completed the Speech Therapy Education Program.

Speech Support Practice Group II
Held every Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at The Parkinson’s Society of Alberta, Room 3Y18. Please call to register - 482-8993

Speech Education Classes

Speech Education Classes in partnership with the University of Alberta, Speech Pathology department. These sessions, held in our office and offered free of charge to PSA members, aim to help clients learns how Parkinson’s affects speech, eating and swallowing, as well as communication and maintaining good speech habits.
